Step 1: Take this Parent-Taught Driver's Education course

After you complete 6 hours of the course, you can apply for your learner's permit! We'll send you a partial completion certificate that you will bring to the DPS.

Note: To obtain your learner's permit, you must have reached the minimum age of 15 years.

Step 2: Apply for your learner's permit at the DPS

Make sure to bring:

  • Proof of identification and social security
  • Proof of Texas residency - 2 documents (this includes anything with your name and TX address, and may also fall under your proof of identification)
  • Vehicle registration/ insurance
  • An application for TX driver's license (DL-14a)
  • A Parental Driver Education Affidavit (DL-90a)
  • A Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form
  • A Classroom Instruction Record (DL-91a)
  • Your parent or guardian

You will have to pass a written exam and vision test.

Step 3: Practice driving with your instructor

While you finish your course, you should complete:

  • 7 hours of parental observation
  • 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
  • 20 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (10 hours must be at night!)

To complete your behind-the-wheel practice, you must be accompanied by a driver who is 21 years or older.

Step 4: Take the DPS vision and road exams

Remember to bring:

  • Your learner's permit
  • Your certificate of completion
  • Your classroom and behind-the-wheel log (DL-91a and DL-91b)
  • Your Parental Driver Education Affidavit (DL-90a)
  • Your Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE).
  • Your vehicle!
Step 5: Get Your Texas Driver's License!

Once you pass your road test, simply pay the $20 license fee and receive your driver's license!

For the first 6 months, your driver's license will be restricted, meaning:

  • You may not operate your vehicle with more than one passenger under the age of 21 who is not a family member
  • You may not operate your vehicle between midnight and 5:00 am (unless there is a medical emergency, or you must participate in employment or school-related activity)
  • You may not operate your vehicle while using a wireless communication device.

After 6 months of incident-free driving, you will have earned your graduated driver's license and your restrictions will fall off!
